Introduction from BFI:

Lynn is a hard-working 20-year-old college student training to become a flight attendant. When she simultaneously discovers she is pregnant and that her mother is seriously in debt, a life-changing decision is forced upon her. Following the success of Egg and Stone and The Foolish Bird, Huang and Otsuka’s new film explores the way that the female body, along with sexual and reproductive health, are subject to financial control. Portraying this reality with meticulous attention to detail, Otsuka’s precisely framed images and Yao Honggui’s naturalistic performance add solidarity and a sense of the cinematic to Lynn’s troubled life. In recent years, many independent filmmakers have explored marginalised lives in present-day China, but presenting that grand narrative entirely from a female perspective feels particularly urgent.
