Born in Hunan, China, grew up in a rural village. She studied screenwriting in the Beijing Film Academy during 2003 to 2007. UNDERGROUND, a documentary which she shot during college in Hunan was archived in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her first screenplay was made to LINGLING’S GARDEN. This process made her realize how to combine her own experience into creating art. She then return home again and wrote and directed first short film THE WARMTH OF ORANGE PEEL, that deals with the universal subject of a father and daughter relationship during her adolescent period. It participated in the Generation Competition of the 60th Berlinale. Her directorial debut was EGG AND STONE, which dealt with the pain and detailed the experience of sexually offended girls. It won the Tiger Award of the Rotterdam IFF in 2012 and Andrei Tarkovsky IFF Grand Prix in 2013. Her films have taken up women’s sexual issues. In 2017, her second feature film THE FOOLISH BIRD won the Special Mention of the Generation 14plus international Jury at 67th Berlinale. In 2022, her third feature film STONEWALLING was premiered at Venice Days, Toronto IFF, New York FF, IBF London IFF, Vienna IFF etc and it won the Best screenplay at World Film Festival of Bangkok. She is an organizer and a tutor of AROUND YOU film workshop.

北京电影学院文学系毕业，中国电影编剧研究院特邀专家。她将自己在湖南老家的生活体验与非专业演员的真实生活揉合在一起，细腻地刻画了中国农村和中国农村女性的坚强与美丽。大四毕业同年冬天在湖南老家导演第一部短片《橘子皮的温度》，参加柏林电影节新生代单元。导演的第一部长片《鸡蛋和石头》，并获得2012年鹿特丹国际电影节金老虎奖。在与一直为自己担任摄影师的大塚龙治结婚后，两人拍摄了双方处于钓鱼岛事件下的中日家庭，联合导演了纪录片《痕迹》（香港国际电影节首映）， 2017年的《笨鸟》（编剧／导演）为其第二部长片剧情片，并获得柏林国际电影节新生代单元评委会特别奖。2022年的第三部长片剧情片《石门》，入围威尼斯国际电影节威尼斯日单元、多伦多国际电影节、纽约电影节, 并获得曼谷国际电影节最佳剧本奖。从此她一直关注国内的社会题材，并通过电影反映出当下中国女性的现状。她也关心和深入教育，担任北京禾溪森林幼儿园任艺术顾问，发现身边影像训练营发起人及导师。
